Sub-species and taxonomy
Three very similar sub-species are generally recognized and show little colour variations such greyer or sandier on the mantle and wings, and intensity of orange on the belly. This bird should probably be included in a super-species that includes several very closely related species that replace each others in different regions. Burchell’s Courser in arid South West Africa, Somali Courser in the Horn of Africa, Cream-coloured Courser in North Africa, Sudan and Middle-East, and finally Indian Courser in India and some neighbouring countries.
